Mechanical Traction Therapy

Mechanical Traction Therapy, as practiced in our office, are highly successful, non-surgical alternative procedures for relieving upper back and arm or lower back and leg pain.

What is Mechanical Traction Therapy?

Mechanical Traction Therapy is a non-surgical procedure that effectively treats disabling low back, neck, and radiating leg and arm pain. This therapy effectively relieves pain associated with disc herniations, degenerative discs, posterior facet syndromes by decompressing of spinal discs and facet joints; that is, unloading due to distraction and positioning. Traction therapy effectively enhances the healing process and renders quick, effective and often amazing pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle sooner.

Is Traction Therapy right for you?

Traction Therapy is an effective treatment for patients suffering herniated or degenerated discs as well as posterior facet syndrome; all of which usually respond well to this type of distraction. Traction Therapy begins with a series of sessions typically 2-3 times per week. Other therapies are often performed on the same day as needed. After a round of treatment, Dr. Richey may prescribe specific exercises designed to help you regain control and strengthen the core muscles that are responsible for stabilization. There are other types of “decompression” therapy tables in Anchorage you may have heard of including VAX-D and DRS. Although effective, some of these therapies are limited to treatment of the low back only and must be used either face up or face down depending on the particular device. Our devices are unique in that they are proven effective for the treatment of the low back as well as upper back and the neck. Clinical studies suggest Traction Therapy provides a majority of qualified candidates with initial relief within a few sessions.
